Graduates of 2016 March for their Diplomas

          The morning of March 31, 2016 was the grand day for the candidates for graduation of CapSU Burias.  The Campus celebrated its 12th Commencement Exercises.

The activity began with the processional of would-be graduates together with their parents/guardians, faculty and staff, department chairs/program coordinators, deans/directors, administrative officials, campus administrator, vice presidents, university president, guests, board of regents, and commencement speaker.  This was followed by a formal program at the Campus Gymnasium.

            Dr. Ludovico C. Olmo Jr., the campus administrator, presented the candidates for graduation to the VP for academic affairs, Dr. Editha C. Alfon, who in turn recommended the candidates for graduation to the University President,  Dr. Editha L. Magallanes, who confirmed their graduation.

            Dr. Ludovico C. Olmo Jr., introduced the commencement speaker, Engr. Roy M. Abaya, ­­­­­­­­­Regional Director of the Department of Agriculture.  In his speech, Abaya congratulated the graduates.  In his words, he said, “You should be proud of yourselves. Why? Because today is the appointed day for you to claim and receive the fruit of your labor. It is just appropriate that you claim the victory now for overcoming all the hardship in order to finish college.”  He also emphasized that education is the key to success.  It is needed in the formation of society, boost the economy, and run the society as a whole.  He stressed the importance of belief and confidence in oneself and that the success of today is just the initiation to the real world. He also mentioned that the graduates must learn to prioritize things and should not give up when faced with failures.  For them to reach their goals, they need to start somewhere.

Abaya’s speech was followed by Dr. Editha L. Magallanes’s presentation of the Plaque of Appreciation and token of gratitude to the speaker.

The graduating students received their diplomas and academic hoods from the University President, Dr. Editha L. Magallanes assisted by the Vice Presidents – Dr. Aladino Leccio (Administration and Finance), Dr. Eidtha Alfon (Academic Affairs), and Dr. Pedro Gavino (Research and Extension); the campus administrator, Dr. Ludovico Olmo Jr.; and the deans (Dr. Milagros Potato – College of Education; Dr. Miriam Magallanes – College of Business Administration; and Dr. Ramises Solante – College of Agriculture and Forestry).

The academic medals for outstanding college students were also awarded by the abovementioned officials assisted by the recipients’’ parents.

John King N. Layos, Cum Laude of Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, delivered his words of gratitude; while Mary Joy D. Llanda, Magna Cum Laude of Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, led the pledge of loyalty. 

Dr. Merilita L. Navarra, Alumni President, inducted fresh graduates to CapSU Alumni Association.

FLP Opens 7th Local Week Celebration

   Capiz State University Burias Campus observed the 7th FLP local week celebration on January 28-29, 2016 with the theme “FLP: Creating a Difference for Tomorrow’s Leaders”.

        Various skill competitions on animal science, crop science, fisheries and agro-forestry were conducted.  Cultural competitions including extemporaneous speaking, vocal solo, vocal duet, and oration also enlivened the affair.  The highlight was the parliamentary procedure contest.

        The opening plenary was chaired by Ms. Lea Jane Salaya, FLP Chapter President.  Dr. Ludovico C. Olmo, the campus administrator, welcomed the guests and attendees. Prof. Gerard Lee Atienza, the Local FLP adviser, introduced the guest speaker, Atty. Arthur J. Lastimoso.

        Atty. Lastimoso is a high school alumnus of the then Panay State Polytechnic College (now Capiz State University), Agri-Science Curriculum. In his speech, he mentioned that   the Future Farmers of the Philippines (now Future Leaders of the Philippines) had a major contribution to his becoming a lawyer.  He told students not to give up on their dreams and not to succumb to failures in life.  He added that they must choose the right leaders during the elections and should not believe everything they see on social media but make informed choices instead.  He concluded his speech by emphasizing that when goals are reached, students must keep their feet on the ground - stay humble, stay simple, and live a life grounded on morality, honesty, and fairness. In parting, he said, “Always remember to have fun.”

        Dr. Pedro G. Gavino, Vice President for Research and Extension, then gave a brief message about qualities of leadership.  He challenge the students of CapSU Burias when he stressed, “Everything starts within yourself, think of the challenge CapSUnians!”
 
        Prof. Ramonita C. Verano, co-adviser of the organization, briefed the participants on the different skills and cultural competitions including the place where these competitions will be conducted.

         Dr. Mary Ann B. Martelino, the OSA chair, delivered her closing remarks that emphasized the importance of responsible leadership.

SSC and GCS Conduct Student Symposium on Social Issues

Sexual harassment, violence against women and children, hazing activities, bullying inside and outside of schools, and derision and abuses against persons with disability are among those discussed during a symposium on January 14, 2016 held at the Campus Gymnasium.

            The Supreme Student Council and the Guidance and Counseling Services joined forces and organized a student symposium to enrich the awareness of students regarding these issues.

            The participants and guests were welcomed by the OSS Chair, Dr. Mary Ann B. Martelino, where she pointed out the purpose of the said event.

The guest speakers for the morning sessions were introduced by the president of the Supreme Student Council, Thea Lyn D. Salaya, BSED 3.

            Prosec. Melchor V. Ocaso, Associate Provincial Prosecutor of the Province of Capiz, discussed Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1995 and Anti-Hazing Law. While Prof. Joseph Febhos Magsipoc, former OSS Director of Capiz State University, talked about Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act of 2004.

            Various questions were asked by the students after the discussion during the open forum moderated by Arlyn Joy Legaspi, SSC Vice-President.

            The afternoon session was started by an animation led by the SSC Officers to uplift the mood of the students.  After which, Thea Lyn D. Salaya, SSC President, introduced the guest speaker, Engr. Efren Linan.

Engr. Efren C. Linan, Intellectual Property Office Director of Capiz State University, talked about the Anti-Bullying Act.  His presentation was followed by Prof. Pamela G. Dionisio, Designated Administrative Officer, who discussed about the Magna Carta of Persons with Disability.

          Questions of students regarding the topics were entertained by the resource speakers during the open forum moderated by Louella Louise Cordero, SSC officer.

            The one-day event was formally closed by Dr. Milagros O. Potato, Dean of the College of Education. Ashlie Mae Dalida, SSC officer, emceed the affair.

CAPSU Burias Holds Earthquake and Fire Drill Orientation

Capiz State University Burias Campus, in cooperation with the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and the Bureau of Fire Protection Officers of the Municipality of Mambusao, conducted an earthquake and fire drill orientation on October 6, 2015 in front of the administration building.

The said event started at 8:30 in the morning with Dr. Loduvico C. Olmo Jr., administrator of the campus, giving his welcome remarks.  He emphasized the importance of the said activity for the safety and well-being of the community.

The Bureau of Fire Protection Officers of the Municipality of Mambusao discussed the different categories of fire and gave emphasis on how fire can destroy property in a matter of minutes.

Mr. Esperedeon Pelaez, the director of the PDRRMC of Capiz
Mr. Esperedeon Pelaez, director of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council of Capiz, further discussed the activities to be conducted in the upcoming month and even year in preparation for unwanted calamities and disasters.  He also mentioned that a team of evaluators will be coming over to assess how CapSU Burias responds to earthquake in an earthquake drill.
